SockWorldrecord

We’re knitting history
The Sock World Record starts with us!
Goal
36’000+ hand-knit pairs of socks, displayed on one gigantic clothesline.
Because knitting brings warmth
And these socks will go where they’re truly needed.
All Socks
will be donated – to outreach buses, shelters and social aid projects.

Initiated by
the Sockenweltrekord association. The members are Miriam Cahannes, Veronika Hug, Susanne Oswald, and Bernd Oswald.

You can start knitting now
Of course, you can start knitting right away, but the official start will take place at the Swiss Yarn Festival (SYF) 2026. Then there will be a year of knitting, and the world record attempt will take place at SYF 2027.

Requirements for the socks

  • At least size 40, but larger sizes are very welcome. Shoe size 43 is often needed, and people with size 45 are also happy to be considered.
  • Leg length at least 10–15 cm, up to 20 cm is ideal.
  • The socks must be loosely stitched together at the back of the shaft (heel to heel) about two centimeters below the upper edge with two or three stitches. Preferably with a contrasting color. Simply tie the beginning and end of the thread together with a tight loop that can be pulled up later. You can find a video on YouTube.
  • Any sock wool is welcome, whether 4-ply, 6-ply, or even 8-ply.
  • Size labeling is not necessary.
  • The collection of socks will start after the start of knitting. Collection points will be announced at a later date.
